How to reset a lost kali linux root password

Introduction

Have you, for any reason, forgotten your kali password ? Well, that actually happened to me, so do not worry, I will show you step by step, how to reset kali root password, but not only root, this work for all (non root) kali user password. 

1. Boot into Grub menu

Reboot your Kali Linux system into Grub menu, you should see similar screen. Then click on “e” in order to enter the edit mode.

2. Edit linux entry in Grub menu

Once in edit mode, you need to locate the linux entry. Use arrows to move down to linux entry, then search for: “ro quiet splash”.

  • Change the read only option into read write: replace ” ro “ with ” rw “
  • Then, at the end of the same linux entry add this : ” init=/bin/bash “.
  • Once done, save by clicking: “Ctrl+x”

3. Reset your kali linux password

Now Kali Linux should boot into root shell mode, and you should see something like this (Check image).

Once in root shell mode, you can now reset your password, the command syntax is: “passwd username

4. Reboot your system

After sucessfully resetting the root password, now you have to reboot again you system using this command: “exec /sbin/init
